Our Irymple Research Station (IRS) is located on the lands of the First People of Millewa-Mallee, and we acknowledge the Latji Latji and Ngintait as the Traditional Owners of the land.
IRS is close to the town of Irymple in Mildura, Victoria.
The facility specialises in horticulture and viticulture research. The farm is planted with over 15 hectares of grapevines and citrus trees. It has around 3,000 citrus trees and 5,000 grapevines. The grapevine collection includes 1,000 different varieties.
Grapes
IRS maintains a major grapevine germplasm collection of many varieties and species, and is a major resource for the Wine Grape and Horticulture Industry.
This collection underpins a grapevine breeding program that began in the 1960s.
Although breeding for improved varieties of dried and table grapes is being phased out, breeding for novel, disease-resistant wine grapes continues.
We are also conducting a rootstock breeding program with the aim of developing improved genotypes suited to Australian conditions for viticulture.
