Important information

The National AI Centre (NAIC) is transitioning from CSIRO to the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) on 1st July 2024. You can find the latest NAIC content at industry.gov.au. For any NAIC-related questions, please email NAIC@industry.gov.au.

With more than 1.9 billion people living in water scarce areas, the need for a reliable, sustainable source of clean water is imperative. CSIRO scientists have developed a device that can harvest potable water from straight out of the ambient air, using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Atmospheric water generation prototype

This technology stands out as it can operate in the majority of humid conditions found on the globe. Optimal operational range starts at 30 per cent Relative Humidity upwards, with more limited performance down at the very dry 15 to 20 per cent RH. It has been designed to maximise energy efficiency per litre of water produced. Its operational versatility means that it can be scaled to suit the required need from small litre quantities to larger volumes.

We have a patent for the material production at the heart of the device, which is licensed to a local Australian manufacturer. The AWG prototype is also protected through a provisional patent.

We are exploring options to establish a spin out company to produce and sell devices based on this technology. Interested investors are encouraged to contact the commercialisation team to explore potential investment.

Technology

  • Current small-scale prototype can produce a cup of water a day in desert-like humidity conditions
  • Operates in almost all humidity conditions
  • Demonstrates very high efficiency of water production
  • Can be scaled, from household to commercial scale
  • Established supply chain for the material at the heart of the device
  • Provisional patent filed for the prototype.

Applications

The prototype could be developed to be used for many applications and industries, including:

  • drinking water
  • agriculture
  • energy
  • life sciences and pharmaceuticals
  • food and beverage.

Intellectual property

A patent has been filed linked to this invention: 2018903009:

Water Capture using Shaped Composite Body

The team

The AWG prototyping team comprises of material scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technicians that have developed the technology over the last 18 months.
