Important information

The National AI Centre (NAIC) is transitioning from CSIRO to the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) on 1st July 2024. You can find the latest NAIC content at industry.gov.au. For any NAIC-related questions, please email NAIC@industry.gov.au.

Natural habitat loss and degradation are significant threats across Australia and the world.

Fifty per cent of global Gross Domestic Product is moderately or highly dependent on nature to provide goods and services.

Businesses are under pressure to assess, disclose and better manage their interactions with nature. However, they have limited ability to do so at scale, and often question where to begin.

CSIRO NatureIQ provides the solution. It is a pay-to-use digital product capable of providing natural capital indicators over a time series.

Our product can empower companies to:

  • baseline biodiversity impacts on nature
  • prioritise areas with the greatest opportunity for improvement through historical and forward analysis
  • navigate natural capital management seamlessly
  • make science-backed decisions
  • disclose relevant metrics in line with sustainable reporting directions, including the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).

We are now at the pilot stage and will soon be launching our early adopter program. Organisations will test drive the technology and help further develop our product.

Technology

CSIRO NatureIQ combines multiple CSIRO environmental indicators, models and datasets into a single natural capital intelligence product.

Our tool allows you to upload locations via json and geojson files, or to select an area of interest Australia wide.

It provides time series analysis on those selected areas including changes to:

  • ecosystem condition and effective habitat area
  • threatened species habitat area
  • localised species extinction risk.

CSIRO NatureIQ improves decision making for biodiversity management with species occurrence data, and helps to prioritise land management decisions through future scenario planning models.

Our technology can help companies make science-backed decisions when it comes to their impact on nature.

Applications

CSIRO NatureIQ is designed with sustainability managers, land developers, ESG specialists, asset managers, and finance directors in mind.

It is suitable for:

  • baselining biodiversity and other natural capital assets
  • understanding the effects that different management practices have on an environmental footprint
  • providing significant data for disclosure, compliance and reporting standards.

Intellectual property

CSIRO has rights in the technology's:

  • environmental indicators
  • custom datasets
  • software
  • bespoke dashboard

that enable state-of-the art biodiversity modelling.

The team

Our team includes early pioneers in:

  • developing species and community-level biodiversity modelling around the world
  • applying technical models to real-world conservation priorities
  • land-use planning and natural resource management.

We also develop biodiversity models that incorporate key ecological processes to predict changes in biodiversity over space and time.

More recently, we’ve been developing a new generation of macroecological approaches to biodiversity modelling and scenario analysis.

We actively support projects focused on:

  • environmental-economic accounting
  • natural capital assessment
  • modelling biodiversity outcomes under scenarios of different land-use, management or climate changes.
