The challenge

Food system security and sustainability in a changing world

Our planet is facing unprecedented global food systems and environmental challenges.

A growing human population, together with shifting dietary preferences, changing economies and climate change, are placing considerable pressures on the land and food security.

In the face of climate change, and to reach our sustainability objectives to reduce emissions, we need to transform our food systems.

We need to rethink both production and consumption in a fast changing socio-economic and environmental context.

Our response

Leveraging system understanding and modelling tools to assess interventions

Our teams develop models and policy analysis tools.

These are applied to better understand complex interactions between biophysical, social, and economic systems underlying food systems at various scales (local, national, and global) and time horizons (weeks to decades).

Our research explores intervention options and trade-offs from production to consumption, to inform policies and investments for healthier and more sustainable food systems.
