The challenge

Supporting environmentally sustainable and ethical agrifood systems

To realise our national and global sustainability objectives, our agrifood systems need to be reshaped.

We need to feed a growing population with healthy diets, while supporting ecosystems health and contributing broader societal and economic benefits.

Our response

Measuring, monitoring and improving the environmental and social footprint of agrifood systems

Our teams work to support prosperous agriculture and food sectors with reduced environmental impacts, and benefits to human health.

Our science advances this impact area by delivering improved:

  • climate, social, and natural capital accounting systems and standards
  • farming practices and technologies that enhance environmental and ethical performance
  • footprint analytics to support investment and improve management actions and market access
  • systems thinking and analysis to support our understanding of wider system benefits and trade-offs for policy and management investments aimed at improving agricultural land use, sustainable diets, and indigenous livelihoods.
