The challenge

Global malnutrition

Malnutrition affects approximately three billion people worldwide.

The triple burden of malnutrition, including undernutrition (wasting, stunting and underweight), micronutrient deficiencies, and over‐nutrition is the leading cause of preventable deaths and disability globally.

It's also projected that nearly 670 million people will still face hunger in 2030.

We need to look at opportunities to improve our food systems to address these issues.

Our response

Finding opportunities to improve our food systems

Our research is increasing understanding of the relationships between food systems and nutrition and health.

We are integrating nutrition-sensitive approaches in agricultural R&D projects at the project design, implementation and evaluation stages.

Our team also modifies and adapts public health nutrition research methods to food system approaches in local and global contexts.

Healthy, equitable and sustainable diets case studies

  • Fish are a well-recognised source of high-quality protein and play an important role in diets, particularly for the poor in many regions of the world.

  • Using innovative metrics to describe the nutritional quality of food production systems is a new and expanding field of research. Through this research we aim to leverage the potential of agriculture to improve nutrition.
