CSIRO and Pacific researchers working together. The Pacific plays a critical role in the global food system. But our region faces growing challenges associated with a changing climate, rising rates of non-communicable diseases and disruptions to food value chains.

Australian and Pacific scientists have been working in partnership for decades to address many of the challenges we face together as a region.

Our Pacific Agrifood Futures initiative looks to build on previous work and establish long-term, strategic partnerships that utilise research from across CSIRO to respond to challenges in the food system. The initiative will utilise the region’s collective knowledge to undertake a whole-of-system approach.

The aim is to improve nutritional outcomes for enhanced health, provide greater access to safe food, build resilience in our region’s food supply chains, and shift towards sustainable food production to create ongoing benefits for future generations.

The initiative will facilitate ongoing collaboration between partners, leveraging existing knowledge to accelerate the development of new technologies and practices.

Pacific Agrifood Futures aims to achieve this by:

  • Developing solutions to system challenges at scale
  • Responding to unique social, economic, and environmental conditions within the Pacific
  • Strengthening existing connections and building new partnerships to support collective action
  • Promoting traditional knowledge, capturing existing research lessons, and trialling new ideas.

We welcome discussions on how we can collaborate further to ensure inclusive, resilient and healthy food systems in the Pacific for generations to come.
