Important information

The National AI Centre (NAIC) is transitioning from CSIRO to the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) on 1st July 2024. You can find the latest NAIC content at industry.gov.au. For any NAIC-related questions, please email NAIC@industry.gov.au.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology is becoming commonly available, however there are significant perception and health and safety (H&S) issues that must be addressed. For example, many people report simulator sickness after using VR devices, and walking while wearing AR displays could distract from real world dangers. Many of these issues are preventing widespread use of the technology, and so are critically important for the industry.

This research program will explore fundamental issues in perception and H&S in head worn AR/VR systems with industry partner Meta, research partner Data61, and the University of South Australia, Monash University, and University of Queensland.

The research will be conducted in 3 related themes; (1) Alleviating Visually Induced Motion Sickness, (2) Physical Movement Safety, and (3) Attention Modelling, and Context Awareness for AR. Teams of students will work on each of these topics, under the guidance of Meta researchers, and close supervision from the academic partners.

Key outcomes will include algorithms for detecting H&S issues, datasets of user behaviour in different H&S scenarios, experimental design and methodology for H&S studies, design guidelines for mitigating H&S issues, and AR/VR prototypes applying these guidelines.
