The role of data-driven decisions in science

'Data is the new oil'

The foundation of good decision making is high-quality data, and as we move further into the digital age, the future of science will become data-driven.

This data foundation will change the way people do their future work. For example, instead of scientists doing experiments in the laboratory they can be done on a computer first, saving time and money.

Volumes of data can train a machine learning algorithm to automate a manual process, enabling a factory worker to spend more time on more important tasks.

Weather, geographical and environmental data can be combined and run through a simulator software platform to predict how a bushfire might spread across a certain landscape, allowing emergency responders to better plan their operations.

Collecting, analysing and storing data plays a crucial role in CSIRO solving some of Australia's greatest challenges, and the digital revolution speeds up, it has the potential to accelerate our science.
