Around the world, the mining industry is facing increasing economic, social and environmental pressures. The global industry must change if it's to continue to be productive and sustainable long-term.
Technology and innovation will play a crucial role in transforming the industry for the future, helping to overcome challenges such as declining ore quality and mining to greater depths, with less environmental impact.
But in order to be successful, the industry, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), mining equipment and technology services (METS) and research sector all need to come together and collaborate on these common challenges.
Our response
Partnering to create the world's most advanced mining research centre
In 2016, we joined forces with CRCMining to create the world's largest, most advanced mining innovation powerhouse, Mining3.
Mining3 comprises all CRCMining’s activities and CSIRO's hard rock (metalliferous) mining research capability and is headquartered in Brisbane, Australia.
Drawing on an extensive network, Mining3 has the scale and industry focus to tackle the greatest challenges facing mining. Mining3 is focused on shortening the innovation cycle to drive real outcomes quickly for its industry members.
Mining3 capabilities include rock sensing and characterisation, blasting, excavation, haulage, automation, geomechanics, energy, performance, safety and process optimisation for both surface and underground mining.
Mining3's industry members include Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti, Barrick Gold and Vale, Caterpillar, Joy Global, Sandvik and Komatsu.
In addition to CSIRO, its research partners include Curtin University, the University of Queensland, The University of Newcastle and the Queensland University of Technology.
