Our water resource assessments

Water Supply For Remote Australian Communities

It has been estimated that more than 400 remote or regional communities in Australia lack access to good quality drinking water. We are helping to tackle the complex challenge of delivering clean and reliable water to remote areas in Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Bradfield Scheme Assessment

In 1938 engineer Dr John Bradfield proposed an inter-catchment water diversion scheme to expand agriculture in central western Queensland by moving water inland from the north coast. The Bradfield Scheme and modern variants were analysed in a detailed desktop study which found that, while technically feasible, they are not economically viable.

Victoria River Water Resource Assessment

We partnered with the Australian Government to investigate opportunities for water and agriculture development in the Victoria River catchment, in the Northern Territory.

Southern Gulf Water Resource Assessment

The Australian Government and CSIRO are partnering to investigate opportunities for water and agricultural development in the Southern Gulf of Carpentaria catchments in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Rapid national appraisals

In 2021, the National Water Grid Authority commissioned CSIRO to undertake several rapid national appraisals to identify potential new opportunities for: (i) groundwater-based irrigation, (ii) desalination of groundwater for irrigation use and (iii) Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) to support irrigated agriculture.

Roper River Water Resource Assessment

We've partnered with the Australian Government to investigate opportunities for water and agriculture development in the Roper River catchment, in the Northern Territory.

Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment

We have investigated the potential of northern Australia's water resources to support increased regional development.

Great Artesian Basin

A comprehensive scientific assessment of water resources of the Great Artesian Basin and potential impacts of climate change and resource development.

Flinders and Gilbert

We have completed, for the Australian Government, an investigation of opportunities for water and agricultural development in the Flinders and Gilbert catchments of north Queensland.

WIRADA

Our alliance with the Bureau of Meteorology develops tools to accurately monitor, assess and forecast the availability, condition and use of Australia's water resources.

Norfolk Island

CSIRO is providing scientific advice to Norfolk Island community and the Australian Government to help them make decisions on how to improve water management on Norfolk Island.

Pilbara water assessment

A comprehensive scientific assessment of long-term water availability in the Pilbara region, to guide responsible resource management into the future. It provides an overview of the effect of future climates and proposed developments on the region’s surface water and groundwater resources.
