About the placement

This internship is with BTF, a bioMérieux company and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

BTF provides the world's most precise quantitative reference standards for microbiological testing. Its patented BioBall™ technology is used in quality assurance, to verify the performance of control methods. The company is also a recognised expert in water control solutions.

As an intern with BTF, you will work with the team to assist with the re-design, improvement and streamlining of the manufacturing process. The process has many elements including microbiology and culture of microbial cells, precise cell counting by flow cytometry, cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen of cell droplets, freeze drying and resulting microbial quality control, packaging and batch release. The project includes improving the process of collecting and freezing cells containing droplets.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: February 2025
  • Working arrangement: Full time or Part time for 200 hours on a fixed term contract, with the possibility for further employment for the right candidate
  • Remuneration: $25/hour plus super on a temporary contract with BTF, a biomerieux company
  • Location: North Ryde, NSW.

Desired capabilities

  • Studying Material Science/Engineering, Biotechnical Engineering, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Cytometry and/or Biology (or similar)
  • Knowledge and application of safe laboratory skills is essential (Physical containment class 2 laboratory experience is advantageous)
  • Previous laboratory skills including pipetting, making media, colony counting, and good aseptic skills is required
  • Ability to communicate and translate information to a range of audiences and vendors
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate or TAFE qualification.
