About the placement

This internship is with Coleambally Irrigation Co-operative Limited (CICL) and is facilitated by the CSIRO’s Generation STEM Links program.

Coleambally Irrigation Co-operative Limited (CICL) is a world-class irrigation business operating a modern, highly automated irrigation delivery service located in the Murrumbidgee Valley in the NSW Riverina.

As an intern with Coleambally Irrigation Co-operative Limited (CICL), you will undertake an audit of closed-conduit water meter assets across the irrigation area, including electromagnetic and mechanical meter types. This project offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both field research and asset management while contributing to the sustainability of water resources. The student will also work with the Water Operations Engineer to design a works program for maintenance and replacement of the closed-conduit meter assets.

Work arrangements

  • Start date: January 2025
  • Working arrangement: Full Time or Part time for 200 hours on a fixed term contract
  • Remuneration: $30.13/hr + Super on a casual contract with Coleambally Irrigation Co-operative Limited, with the possibility for further employment for the right candidate
  • Location: Coleambally, NSW. Accommodation support can be negotiated with the team.

Desired capabilities

  • Studying a Bachelor of Engineering with a focus on agriculture, water engineering, irrigation, water distribution (or similar)
  • Agricultural knowledge or experience is advantageous
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, especially Excel, is required
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Sound communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to achieve project goals
  • Able to undertake field research

Requirements

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate qualification.
  • Ability to swim (due to working in close proximity to irrigation channels) and willing to complete a swimming assessment prior to internship commencement
  • Obtain a police check prior to internship commencement

CICL operates over an area of 457,000 hectares, providing irrigation water to its customers for mostly broadacre annual crops like cotton, rice and wheat, as well as horticulture and livestock operations. The water is delivered through a network of over 500 kilometres of earthen supply channels using a highly automated control system. CICL also emphasises innovation in irrigation technology and asset management to ensure long-term water security for the region’s agricultural activities.
