Voyage summary
Research voyage out of Hobart to conduct sea trials and testing of scientific equipment, study deep water properties in Storm Bay and map habitats in the Huon Marine Park. The voyage will be used by the Marine National Facility (MNF) to conduct testing of various scientific equipment including the Triaxus, PLAOS (Profiling Lagrangian Acoustic Optical System), new multi-corer and Hydro-Bios multi net, as well as commission a new deep towed camera system. Sea trials are a regular part of the annual voyage schedule and are important for maintaining and developing capability.
There are two research projects on the voyage:
- targeted sampling program to characterise the deep water of Storm Bay and its nutrient concentration (Karen Wild-Allen, CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere)
- benthic habitat mapping within the Huon Marine Park (Cath Sampson, Parks Australia)
The studies in Storm Bay aim to increase understanding of the deep water and its nutrient concentration, which is currently uncertain. Water samples and sensor data will be used to determine whether deep water intrusions into Storm Bay have the potential to modify water quality. This research will use CTD and Triaxus instruments.
A program of benthic habitat mapping will be undertaken in the Huon Marine Park on behalf of Parks Australia. These data will be used to help build a framework for better prediction and mapping of deep-sea coral communities. This research will use RV Investigator Mulltibeam Echosounder (MBES) systems for seafloor mapping.
The voyage includes 23 science participants, all of whom are CSIRO staff (Parks Australia staff are not on board). This is the minimum science team required to achieve voyage objectives.
COVID-19 Protocols
To safeguard the health and well-being of participants, strict COVID-19 protocols will apply to all activities on this voyage, including testing of all participants for COVID-19 prior to departure. For further information about the MNF COVID-19 Protocols, visit Restart of at-sea operations following COVID-19 shutdown
Voyage outcomes
Summary of voyage outcomes - as well as voyage image gallery - will be published approximately one month after completion of the voyage.
