Voyage summary

Research voyage to the Southern Ocean to maintain the Southern Ocean Time Series (SOTS) automated moorings that collect long-term ocean monitoring data.

The main objective of the voyage will be the deployment of a new SOTS mooring (SOFS-7.5), which will measure the meteorological and ocean properties important to air-sea exchanges, ocean stratification, waves, and currents. Water samples will also be collected during the voyage for nutrient and plankton measurements.

The Southern Ocean is an important part of the global climate system, soaking up carbon dioxide and heat to moderate the earth’s atmosphere. The SOTS moorings measure these processes under extreme conditions, where they are most intense and least studied. SOTS provide high frequency observations sustained across many years.

Voyage outcomes

As a result of this voyage, researchers deployed a mooring to support the SOTS automated mooring array. These moorings will provide long-term observations in a critical part of the Southern Ocean where these interactions are most intense and least studied.

These data provide a wide range of information about the physics of ocean mixing and insolation, the chemistry of ocean nutrients and the biological responses of phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish.

This voyage is part of a multiyear partnership between Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and MNF, which delivers critical long time-series ocean data to global datasets.
