As Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO has a clear vision to create a better future for Australia. The world is changing and there are escalating risks, which is why CSIRO’s strong local, trusted connections within our global village are key to unlocking boundless opportunities.

Our purpose, vision and strategy

Our purpose is to solve the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Our strategy provides more detail on the six greatest challenges we are solving, as well how we will solve them through the strategic priorities aligned with our objectives, including a number of key initiatives that will drive our performance.

One of these key initiatives is our collaborative program of missions. Missions are bold initiativesthat tackle multi-faceted problems we face by bringing together the innovation ecosystem, including research agencies, universities, industry, government and community to create positive benefit, new jobs and economic growth. So far, we have launched missions in drought resilience, ending plastic waste, future protein, hydrogen industry and trusted agrifood exports.

Our people bring our strategy to life every day and are our most valuable asset. By living our CSIRO values, they are at the heart of realising our vision to create a better future for Australia.

Innovation through collaboration

Solving the greatest challenges cannot be done by one organisation alone. We work with partners across Australia and around the world, spanning research, government, industry and our communities. This includes technology companies, the banking sector, government and non-government agencies, small and medium businesses to deliver science driven technologies to create a better future for all Australians.

Trends influencing our strategy

For more than 100 years, CSIRO has forecast shifts in the global ecosystem, strengthened Australia’s ability to respond through a strong innovation network, and evolved as a national science agency to be agile in its approach to deliver innovative science to future-proof the quality of life, the economy and the environment for all Australians.

We leverage external insights and our own science foresight from our publications and industry roadmaps, to inform research decisions and strategic direction
