As Australia's national science agency, we are dedicated to addressing the nation's greatest challenges by collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to create Indigenous-led science solutions. Guided by knowledge systems that have sustained Australia for over 65,000 years, we aim to foster impactful innovations through shared expertise, ethical practices, and sustainable partnerships.
Our inaugural Indigenous Collaboration and Partnerships Report 2023-24 tracks the progress of our capabilities and commitment to Indigenous-led research. This self-assessment has provided valuable insights into our strengths and areas for growth that, in conjunction with our Reconciliation Action Plan, will help us to refine our strategies and develop opportunities for improvement.
2023-24 at a glance:
- Connection and engagement: We foster leadership and collaboration in Indigenous research projects, and prioritise long-standing relationships that integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledge into research endeavours.
- Science and technology translation: We deepen collaborations to translate research into practical societal and market outcomes, supporting Indigenous-led enterprises and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to position themselves at the forefront of innovation.
- Capacity building and improving standards: Our capacity-building efforts include sustainable career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, although challenges exist in resourcing and recruitment processes. Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles are embedded to promote ethical practices, collaboration and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contributions.
- Reputation in Research and Development (R&D) sector: With around 220 Indigenous-related research projects delivered since 2017-18, CSIRO has a strong reputation in the R&D sector. However, improving our data collection processes to fully understand benefits associated with project delivery and evolving research partnerships for co-ownership of project IP present areas for development.
- Impact delivered: There is strong evidence of positive project outcomes, with future Indigenous-led project evaluations planned to assess alignment with Indigenous priorities and lasting impact.
The Indigenous Collaboration and Partnerships Report 2023-24 highlights our commitment to Indigenous engagement and the opportunity to deepen our efforts in co-creating culturally respectful research pathways, career support, and capacity building. Together, we aim to shape a future where Indigenous knowledge and knowledge systems enhance wellbeing, environmental harmony, and long-term prosperity for all Australians.
