What is SAF?
SAF is jet fuel made from renewable sources as opposed to conventional fossil jet fuels. This can include biomass, which is material that comes from agricultural crops and waste, animal fats and vegetable oils. SAF drops into existing infrastructure and can achieve between 60 and 100 per cent reduction in emissions compared to normal jet fuels.
In the longer-term electrification or alternative fuels, such as green hydrogen will be key to decarbonising aviation.
CSIRO-Boeing SAF State of Play Report 2024
The 2024 SAF State of Play Report provides an update on the sustainable aviation fuel sector following the release of the SAF Roadmap in 2023. The report outlines key global and domestic developments in policy, research and development (R&D), and investment.
The report highlights:
- Policy shifts and industry challenges impacting SAF adoption
- R&D priorities essential for driving innovation and scalability
- Collaborative efforts needed to build a competitive SAF industry
This report draws on insights from a roundtable of 40 leaders from 28 Australian research, industry, and government organisations. Discussions explored challenges and opportunities for scaling SAF production, focusing on cost pressures, feedstock innovation, and key steps to advance Australia's SAF industry.
The findings emphasise the need for stable, long-term policies and ongoing R&D investment to support Australia's SAF industry and enhance its global competitiveness.

CSIRO-Boeing SAF Roadmap 2023
In 2023 CSIRO, in collaboration with Boeing, conducted an analysis that considers SAF feedstock availability and production potential in the APAC region, with a primary focus on Australia and New Zealand.
In consultation with over 40 organisations from across the value chain, nationally and internationally, including industry, government and academia, to identify the opportunities and risks, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap builds consensus on developing an Australian SAF industry, identifying opportunities to produce and scale production using Australian feedstocks.
This Roadmap is part of the critical work CSIRO is undertaking to support Australia’s hardest to abate sectors to halve their emissions by 2035. Since publication, the SAF Roadmap has been cited extensively in the federal government's Aviation Green and White papers.
