Food systems and food security

Aus4Innovation

We’re helping build Vietnam’s innovation capacity and deliver agriculture and food research to market.

Resilience Initiative for Food and Agriculture

Formed through a partnership with ANU and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the initiative delivers science-backed, development-ready solutions for pressing agriculture and food security needs in Asia and the Pacific.

Aquatic foods in healthy and sustainable diets

We are analysing how aquatic foods could further contribute to healthy and sustainable diets around the world.

UN and Global Fisheries Engagement

Our fisheries scientists contribute to sustainable global fisheries through participation and engagement with Regional Fisheries Management Organizations. Our research across a number of key species is used to assess resources and make management decisions.

Global Burden of Animal Diseases

We're part of a global consortium that aims to quantify the societal impacts of livestock diseases to better inform future investments in animal health.

LiveGAPS

Together with global partners, we're providing the data needed to improve the livelihoods of livestock farmers in developing countries.

Climate

WMO Global Atmosphere Watch

We manage three observation platforms that are part of the World Meteorological Organization's Global Atmospheric Watch network; the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station, Northern Territory Baseline Air Pollution Station and the RV Investigator. Cape Grim is one of three premier stations in the world.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports

CSIRO authors are among the global team of experts who have contributed to reports developed for the IPCC. The 2021/22 Assessment Report 6 includes three volumes: The Physical Science Basis, published in August 2021; Impacts, Adaptation and vulnerability, published February 2022; and Mitigation of Climate Change, to be published in March 2022.

Global greenhouse gas budgets

Global budgets for three key greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) provide up-to-date information about the sources and sinks of these important contributors to global warming.

Climate change in the Pacific

We are working with partners in the Pacific to enhance the capacity of Pacific nations to incorporate climate change science into decision making and adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.

Water

Our research aims to help Australia better manage its river basins and groundwater resources, and improve social, economic and environmental benefits through water resources management. We also apply our expertise to international water management projects.

CSIRO research and project delivery in developing nations is aiming to help address gender inequality through the key areas of agriculture, water management, natural resource management, climate change, health, nutrition and education.

Basin planning in Nepal

Nepal’s plentiful water resources require careful management to ensure equitable use across the many competing demands of water users.

Groundwater use in Bangladesh

Researchers from Bangladesh and Australia are working together with policy makers to understand the sustainable level of water use, particularly groundwater use, for irrigation in the northwest region of Bangladesh.
