The National AI Centre (NAIC) is transitioning from CSIRO to the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) on 1st July 2024. For any NAIC-related questions, please email NAIC@industry.gov.au.

The ‘Emerging Technologies for the Integration of Autonomous Vehicles into Networked Naval Operations' program will deliver graduates capable of tackling Australia's pressing current and future challenges in the defence, maritime and aerospace industry sectors. Effectively integrating crewed vessels and autonomous maritime/aerial vehicles requires technological advancements, robust legal and regulatory frameworks, skilled and knowledgeable operators navigating complex challenges, and careful coordination and seamless communication.

The Sir Lawrence Wackett Defence and Aerospace Centre at RMIT University and the Defence and Maritime Innovation and Design Precinct at the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania jointly propose to tackle these challenges with a cohort of students working toward developing the knowledge and technology required to design, operate, and maintain uncrewed surface/undersea/aerial vehicles including Robotics and AI, legal and regulatory frameworks, cybersecurity, human-factors and machine interactions, and environmental concerns.

The program will build on the institutions' long-standing relationships with Australia's Department of Defence, defence-industry prime and small-to-medium enterprises, and remote and regional communities.

This proposal intends to provide enabling research, testing, and evaluation, for realising the capability road map within the RAN's Robotics Autonomous-Systems and Artificial Intelligence Strategy and to help address the critical shortages of specialised R&D personnel currently affecting the Australian defence sector.
