The challenge
Understanding onshore gas in an Australian setting
Australia has vast resources of onshore gas, including coal seam gas, shale gas and tight gas.
Onshore gas is found in complex geological systems and is normally difficult to extract, requiring innovative technological solutions. Accessing these reserves will provide Australia with large quantities of gas to meet domestic needs and for export. But, to ensure any impacts are minimised, we'll need to use world's best-practice safety, engineering and environmental standards.
Our response
Delivering solutions for industry
Our research aims to improve our understanding of Australia's onshore gas resources and to develop appropriate technology in a socially and environmentally responsible way. We are ensuring that Australia's onshore gas industry is ongoing, profitable and world's best practice.
CSIRO is partnering with industry through the Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA) for research on the environmental, social and economic impacts of onshore gas development for communities. GISERA projects and research findings are verified independently and available to everyone.
This research is helping industry, government and communities make informed decisions about onshore gas development, to manage impacts on society, the economy and the environment.
