Kebari® is the registered trade mark for CSIRO-bred barley varieties Ohalo and Ohalo2.

What is Kebari® barley?

Kebari® is a barley grain that has been bred using conventional plant breeding methods to have significantly reduced levels of hordeins, the type of gluten found in barley. More information about the development of Kebari® barley is available at Reducing the gluten content of barley and in the Plant Biotechnology Journal.

Is Kebari® barley gluten-free?

The gluten content of Kebari® barley has been reduced to below 5 parts per million (ppm). While it is 'ultra-low' in gluten, the grain cannot be called 'gluten-free' in Australia or New Zealand under the current Food Standards Code, as it is a barley grain and does contain some gluten. However, the gluten level is well below 20 ppm, the level recommended by the World Health Organization for classification as gluten-free, so in some other countries Kebari® barley can be classified as gluten-free.

Where is Kebari® barley grown?

The production, storage and supply of Kebari® barley is managed by CSIRO's grain production partners. In 2016 Kebari® was grown in New South Wales and South Australia.

Who was the investment partner in developing Kebari®?

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) provided long-term support for the development of Kebari® barley.

What products contain Kebari® barley?

The first commercially available product made with Kebari® grain is now available in Germany. The Pionier beer was released by German beer producer Radeberger in April, 2016. It is hoped that this is the first of many foods and beverages that will be available.

Why is the first product available a beer?

Our researchers have achieved ultra-low gluten levels in hulled barley, typically used in malt products and brewed beverages such as beer. A hulless version, preferred for food applications, will be available in a couple of years.

When will products be available in Australia?

Radeberger has no plans to make the Pionier product available in Australia. We are continuing to explore opportunities in Australia to develop a local version, particularly if there are regulatory changes in the future. When the development of the hulless (food-suitable) version is complete, there is a plan to work with manufacturers to bring a range of food and beverages to Australian consumers.

Is Kebari® barley genetically modified (GM)?

No. Kebari® barley has been developed using conventional plant breeding techniques. More information about the development of Kebari® grain is available at Reducing the gluten content of barley and in the Plant Biotechnology Journal.
