Made up of some 70 specialists in mining science and technology, our Sustainable Mining Program addresses major challenges facing the resource sector and has a solid track record of delivering step change technologies and substantial benefits for the industry stakeholders.

We developed the world first longwall automation system (LASC) that led to enormous safety improvement for underground coal mining in Australia, USA and China.

We carried out unprecedented large open pit research to design world-best practice that was sponsored by 12 mining companies representing the majority of the world's diamond and base metals producers, and produced four books to guide professionals in the investigation, design and construction of stable rock slopes.

We are also a world leader in developing space technologies for in-situ resource utilisation and remote 3D scanning.

As a current key research priority, we are actively developing new technologies for innovative mass and selective mining systems to supply critical minerals that underpin global energy transformation and net zero emissions in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
