Get ready for it, folks! Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff have put together our latest Spotify playlist. And it's all about National Reconciliation Week.
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. It also serves to help us explore how we contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. It runs from 27 May to 3 June.
The playlist highlights the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians from all around the country. This includes artists you know and love like Yothu Yindi, Troy Cassar-Daley and Jessica Mauboy. But it also includes up-and-coming talent like Emily Wurramara, Isaiah Firebrace, Miiesha and Baker Boy.
The theme for this year's National Reconciliation Week is ‘In this together’. So, we’ve also added bands and artists who have collaborated with other Australian musicians. As a result, it's a jam and a half!
Music plays a vital role in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. It brings people together through song and dance and helps pass on knowledge and wisdom to the next generation. It's also used as a tool to preserve traditional Indigenous languages and raise awareness of the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This playlist highlights the power of music as a universal language to connect people from all cultures. Not to mention, it's a tuneful tribute to our island home.
So turn up the speakers or pop in your headphones and enjoy.
Our soundtrack to National Reconciliation Week 2020
There is much we can learn from the people who have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years and who give us permission to leave our footprints alongside theirs. Since we launched our first reconciliation action plan in 2016, we've been making progress across all aspects of our organisation and science. But there’s still work to be done.
So, follow our social channels all week as we celebrate National Reconciliation Week and Indigenous science excellence.
