Cosmos has a rich history of science journalism in Australia and ensures that vital and trusted science information and education resources are provided to the community.
As announced in June 2024, CSIRO Publishing, the national science agency’s editorially independent publishing arm, has taken on publication of Cosmos for the coming year.
While under previous ownership, Cosmos received a grant from the 2023 Meta News Fund (administered by the Walkley Foundation) for a project which aimed to investigate the opportunities and risks of using artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting science communication professionals to develop and disseminate important, factually accurate, science explainers.
Cosmos set out on this experimental project to test and report back on its experiences of using AI in its newsroom and provide evidence-based examples of the risks and opportunities for science communication. Cosmos has published an article that explains the project’s rationale.
Cosmos has briefly paused the project in order to review the feedback and queries received so far and remains committed to ensuring responsible and ethical AI practices.
