21 March 2023 Statement

The final IPCC report, the Synthesis Report, was approved by 195 member governments of the IPCC, including Australia.

The report integrates the findings of the three Working Group assessments, The Physical Science Basis (2021); Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (2022); and Mitigation of Climate Change (2022), as well as three Special Reports on various topics released in 2018 and 2019.

The report concludes there is a rapidly closing window for actions to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all; and that now is the time to start adapting to climate change at a large scale through rapid transition across all sectors and systems.

Researchers from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have made major contributions to the Special Reports and the Working Group assessments, through authorship of several chapters, and the many scientific papers cited in these previous reports. Our contributions to previously released IPCC Sixth Assessment reports have been integrated in the findings of the Synthesis Report.

CSIRO contributes to global climate knowledge in identifying impacts of climate change, and helping the world adapt. We monitor the Earth system, model the climate, and make the latest greenhouse gas data available to interested parties around the world. We work collaboratively with governments, industry and research partners to assess adaptation and mitigation solutions to climate change across sectors as diverse as environment, finance, water and agriculture.

The Synthesis Report is now available on the IPCC website.
