Our mission

To provide high quality Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education experiences and help deliver a positive impact for Australia.

As the National Science Agency, we have a duty to help build STEM capability, and a unique platform from which to do so. Being at the forefront of Australian science, we can put cutting edge science into the hands of young Australians.

To build STEM capability, we focus on:

  • connecting industry to education
  • supporting groups that are underrepresented in STEM
  • engaging with communities
  • translating our science for the classroom and the Australian curriculum
  • offering professional development for educators.
As the National Science Agency, CSIRO is committed to help build the STEM-capable workforce Australian needs now and in the future. We've got a really unique platform to do this. Being at the forefront of Australian science, we love sharing our expertise, our research, our facilities, our resources, putting cutting-edge science into the hands of young Australians to inspire and create opportunities to explore, experiment and learn just what's possible with STEM.

We work really closely with industry. We support teachers and educators. We work hard to ensure those traditionally underrepresented thrive in the STEM future.

To do this, we partner with like-minded organisations to design and deliver evidence-backed programs and activities that build the STEM capability of young people, of educators and the community and we've been doing it for 40 years. We are really proud of the work we do and the impact it has. If you want to learn more, check out our website and subscribe to our newsletter.

Our story

Since 1981, CSIRO Education and Outreach has built a national network of connections between our scientists, industry, educators, students and the community.

Our initiatives have evolved into a range of programs and teaching resources to help our young people see science in action.

In 2020, we were awarded the Australian Museum Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion, for our work incorporating 60,000+ years of Indigenous ecological knowledge and experience upon which modern STEM knowledge is built.

Our programs are designed to promote inclusivity, enhance accessibility, and diversify Australia's emerging STEM talent. These initiatives bring STEM to life for over 200,000 students each year.

Who we serve

We provide a suite of evidence-based STEM education experiences, catering to young people, educators, industry professionals and the wider community.

Our student programs are suited to primary and secondary school pupils as well as undergraduate students.

We offer curriculum-aligned resources and professional development opportunities for registered teachers and adults who teach or mentor students. This includes parents, family members, school support staff, school leaders, elders, community group members, and industry professionals.

STEM professionals (those with careers linked to Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths) play an important role in sharing their expertise and bringing real-world STEM into the classroom.

Industry collaboration is also critical to the success of these programs. We collaborate with businesses, government and non-government organisations that support our programs through funding or in-kind support.
