Generous leave conditions
We offer generous leave options that can be accessed at various stages of your life and time at CSIRO. Here is a snapshot of our offerings and you can read more, including our salary scales in the CSIRO Enterprise Agreement 2023-2026.
- Four weeks annual recreation leave, which can also be taken at half pay and has a cash out option
- Four days annual miscellaneous leave to meet personal obligations, including attending emergency household matters, moving house and volunteering
- Annual shutdown between Christmas and New Year’s Day with no deduction from leave balances
- 18 weeks paid primary caregiver parental leave and unpaid leave up to 24 months from the date of birth or placement of the child
- Eight weeks paid secondary caregiver parental leave (increasing progressively to 18 weeks by November 2026) and unpaid leave up to 24 months from the date of birth or placement of the child
- 18 days sick and carers leave per year
- Three days compassionate leave on each occasion
- Three months long service leave at the end of 10 years service
- Purchase extra leave up to 12 weeks a year
- Substitute a public holiday for another day
- Uncapped domestic family violence and abuse leave, including for casual employees
- Leave without pay for periods of up to three years for family and personal reasons
- 20 days leave for voluntary emergency management activity each year
- 10 days gender affirmation leave
- Three days cultural leave to attend significant religious or cultural obligations and an additional 10 days paid cultural leave per calendar year may be granted
Indigenous employees
- One day of paid NAIDOC leave per year
- Six days paid ceremonial leave over two years, and an additional 10 days paid ceremonial leave per calendar year may be granted
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional kinship relationships are a recognised group within all family related leave provisions, including sick and carers leave and compassionate leave
