While delivering great science is important, the safety and well-being of our people and partners on board research vessel (RV) Investigator will always be our number one priority.
Our Marine National Facility (MNF) has in place comprehensive voyage health management protocols to help reduce health risks, including risk of COVID infection, for participants and crew onboard RV Investigator.
There are a range of measures undertaken before and during a voyage to safeguard the health of our participants and partners. These measures are assessed on an ongoing basis, including in relation to COVID threat, to ensure they provide the greatest protection with changes in the situation, health professional advice and level of risk.
Subject to risk assessment, voyages may include an on-shore quarantine period prior to participants boarding the vessel, PCR and rapid antigen testing, and onboard mask wearing.
Current health risk mitigation measures for voyages include:
- all participants are recommended to have had vaccinations for influenza-like illnesses
- all voyages include dedicated onboard medical support from medical professionals (with effect from IN2025_V02).
Consistent with advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisations (ATAGI), there is no longer a requirement for voyage participants to have COVID vaccinations.
In relation to COVID infection, we maintain Voyage COVID Management Protocols that are informed by expert advice from health professionals and support a best practice approach to protecting the health and safety of voyage participants, crew and the community.
Our infectious disease management policy is regularly reviewed and benchmarked against the best practice of international commercial vessels and the health community.
In the lead up to a voyage, our MNF team supply all participants with relevant health protocol information to ensure they are well-prepared and supported ahead of their voyage.
Maintaining a close watch on the national infectious landscape will continue to inform the health and hygiene practices onboard RV Investigator.
