To be considered, Piggyback Applications need to be low in complexity and result in little or no disruption to the delivery of the Primary Voyage objectives. Piggyback projects undergo a feasibility assessment and can be added to a voyage with the approval from the MNF.

Application call details

The Piggyback Application call is currently OPEN.

Purpose of Piggyback Applications

Piggyback Applications are used to fill unused capacity in the Voyage Schedule or where projects of national benefit, that require little or no additional resourcing, can be incorporated.

Opportunities on existing voyages

Once successful Primary Applications and Supplementary Applications have been confirmed as part of the voyage schedule, there may be remaining opportunities for scientists to participate on an existing voyage under a 'Piggyback' arrangement. These include data collection from underway instruments, or requests to carry out a limited sampling program or to deploy a piece of equipment.

Who can apply?

Piggyback Applications for sea time on RV Investigator can be made by Australian researchers employed by an Australian research organisation and based in Australia. International collaborators and Australian researchers working overseas for Australian research organisations can be included as Co-Investigators on applications.

How to apply

Applications can be made via our online application portal called MFP (Marine Facilities Planning). Each application must be made under one of five access Streams that encourage a broad range of research and national benefit.

A Piggyback Application can be made at any time, noting applications close 3 months prior to the voyage commencement date. If applicants wish to be added to a voyage closer to the voyage commencement date, they are advised to contact mnf@csiro.au and applications will be reviewed and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Before submitting a Piggyback Application in MFP, applicants are requested to first discuss their project with the MNF. Please email mnf@csiro.au

To make a Piggyback Application in MFP:

  1. register for an account
  2. select 'New Application' >> 'Piggyback Application'
  3. select the voyage/s you are applying for
  4. complete and submit your application/s.
