What are lupins?
Lupins are a nutritious, high-protein legume with big potential to expand into new plant protein markets.
Why lupins?
Lupins are high in protein and fibre, low in starch and fat and have a low glycaemic index.
Australia is the world’s biggest lupins producer, with more than half of production grown in Western Australia.
Most lupins are grown for use as animal feed, although it’s been part of the human diet for thousands of years.
Today’s lupin consumer markets are relatively small. But there’s a big opportunity to grow lupin as an additional future protein source.
What lupin products are currently available?
A range of lupin products are currently available including flours and flakes, which can be used as ingredients at home.
Lupin protein ingredients are also available for use in manufactured food products.
We’re working with the industry to overcome R&D challenges, develop additional products and grow market opportunities.
What are the research and development (R&D) opportunities?
Australia is at the cutting edge of legume grain quality.
New opportunities are being created in processing lupins on shore for high-value protein ingredients, instead of relying on imports.
Together we can solve R&D challenges and accelerate development of innovative new products, by enhancing crop quality, increasing value and entering new markets.
R&D opportunities across the value chain, include:
- Crop breeding for protein content and quality
- Assessing impact of processing on functionality
- Exploring potential consumer health benefits
- Enhancing the flavour profile of new products.
What activities are underway?
Our Future Protein Mission is targeting lupins as a key plant protein crop and growth opportunity for Australia.
We’re convening new partnerships and R&D projects between industry and the research sector to capture this opportunity.
