Welcome to the August 2024 CSIRO Alumni network newsletter.
In this month's newsletter you can read about our latest news, events and courses. We encourage alumni to get in touch and let us know what you're doing now. We are keen to support our members and can post and promote your news on our website to help build our network.
Thank you for supporting our CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics
We would like to thank all our members who generously donated to our scholarship in response to the June appeal. Your support has helped to ensure that the scholarship will be available for many more young scientists.
The 2025 scholarship will soon be open for applications, so please encourage any PhD physicists you know to apply!
Highlights from our recent Healthy Ageing event
Professor Cassandra Szoeke continued our Healthy Ageing series with a talk on bone health. She was joined by Prof Susie Nilsson, Research Director, Biomedical Manufacturing CSIRO who discussed advances in STEM cell work.
Forging a better future: UK and Australia partner for progress
We've partnered with United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) to increase the research and innovation impact of the two nations.
Our collaboration will help strengthen economic, innovation and research connections between Australia and the UK, aligning with government priorities to enhance mutual scientific impact.
This partnership includes initiatives addressing climate change, clean energy, water quality, and net zero targets.
Help grow our alumni network
We now have over 4,900 members but we know that there are many more former colleagues out there. Help us build the alumni network and forward this newsletter on or share the link to alumni registration.
Many presentations and seminars are now being held online – so you can attend from the comfort of your own home. Our alumni calendar lists both CSIRO and external events, so you can find out about a wide range of events.
To help connect alumni with one another, we encourage you to list your own events on our website. Let us know if you are organising, presenting or attending events and we can help promote it to the alumni network – please email alumni@csiro.au
We feature a range of alumni stories on our website celebrating the achievements of our members. We encourage members to get in touch and send in their stories of trials and tribulations – all in the name of scientific research!
So, if you have received an award, written a book or have any stories that you'd like to share with the alumni network, please email alumni@csiro.au
CSIRO-Boeing History project
We are looking to celebrate our 35-year CSIRO-Boeing relationship. This history project is being led by Claire Manson, Tom Spurling and Terry Healy. We know that many of our alumni members have worked with Boeing throughout the years and we are keen to hear from you. So, please get in touch with alumni@csiro.au if you have any stories or photos you'd like to share.
Science in the Outback: The Life of CSIRO at Deniliquin and its People
Allan Wilson was a scientist at the CSIRO for 27 years and was its officer in charge for 12 of those. He set about writing a history of the local branch, which he is proud to be launching next month at a special reunion event.
The book charts the history of the CSIRO in Deni from establishment in 1945 to its closure in 1990. It details many organisational changes that occurred across its 45-year history and its major research findings. It also presents vignettes of more than 80 of the scientific and supporting staff of the 500 or so who worked there over that time.
On a sadder note, if you would like to let the alumni network know about the passing of one of our members, please email us and we can post a notice to the news page and also feature an obituary within our stories section.
We invite alumni members to add their own tributes, so please contact alumni@csiro.au if you would like to share your memories of them.
