Artists representation of the coalescence of platinum atoms to form nanoparticles. Continued injection of platinum atoms (represented as spheres) increases the size and complexity of the nanoparticles; a process known as coarsening.

The animation refers to the work being done by Dr Amanda Barnard and Dr Hector Barron Escobar from the Molecular & Materials Modelling lab in CSIRO's Data61. They have been studying the nucleation and growth process of catalytic nanoparticles based on classical atomistic simulations to design and develop more sustainable nanocatalysts. Animated films of the entire process were created, facilitating the understanding of the surface defects evolution.
