The Parkes telescope is the largest single dish radio telescope in the southern hemisphere. And, being in the southern hemisphere it’s uniquely capable of seeing the centre of our galaxy, and other galaxies that you can’t see from the northern hemisphere. It’s got cutting edge instrumentation, which makes it appropriate for SETI, and it’s a telescope with a long history of discovery, including most recently ‘fast radio bursts’.
