How we scope and plan projects Getting the detail of projects right at the outset is important, so let’s take a look at how we scope and plan projects at CSIRO. Working with CSIRO will generally fall within four types of engagement models. These models provide a framework that can help define the scope of your project, providing a foundation to deliver the outcomes you need and avoiding the elements you don’t. The scope will also inform the way your project is priced. Understanding which model might best fit your project helps set a clear direction for the collaboration from the outset. 1. Consultancy – projects with no experiment requirements where we provide synthesis and advice based on existing knowledge and expertise. E.g. technical reports and consulting advice. 2. Services – routine and repeatable activities undertaken based on existing knowledge and expertise and IP. E.g. disease/pathogen screening. 3. Applied Research & Development (R&D) – R&D that delivers outcomes to a specific industry or external partner that are directed towards a specific practical aim or objective. E.g. optimising production system for a company, creating a new product line. 4. Fundamental/Basic R&D – R&D that is experimental in nature and designed to acquire new knowledge with or without a specific application in mind. These projects are IP rich and may have multiple applications. E.g. gene identification for agricultural production traits. Our pricing reflects the value and high impact outcomes that collaborating with a national science agency provides. We are focused on delivering realised impact for our collaborators in the Australian research and innovation eco-system. All of our commercial activities are subject to the Commonwealth Pricing Framework Policy and Competitive Neutrality Framework. The application of these frameworks varies according to the type of engagement model and project undertaken. Consider these questions to help you define a potential project with CSIRO: • What type of engagement are you seeking? • What are the specific deliverables you need from the project? • How do you need the outputs delivered? • Do you have specific timelines or milestones that must be met? • What is out of scope for this engagement? • What is your budget? • Is there IP involved? What are your expectations on IP? What differentiates CSIRO: • A focus on delivering clients high-quality science and technology solutions that are fit for the intended purpose. • The breadth of research and commercial expertise means we can be a one-stop-shop. From idea to marketplace with access to extensive in-house, commercial, equity, legal and IP expertise. • Access to national and international footprint and networks.
