Current activities

Ms Leanne Bischof is an image analyst with the CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics in the Quantitative Imaging group.

The group aims to expedite and automate discovery in the biological and materials sciences using computer vision and statistical methods.

Background

Ms Bischof joined CSIRO in 1990 as an image analyst. 

Since then, she has been involved in developing major projects in image analysis.

Projects that Ms Bischof has contributed to include development of:

Ms Bischof was awarded a National Engineering Excellence award by the Institution of Engineers Australia, in 2005.
  • The Gemmological Digital Analyser, the world's first automated device for grading opals, developed with Opal Producers Australia Limited
  • CSIRO's HCA-Vision Software, technology that enables high-throughput screening of candidate compounds for drug discovery by quantifying their effects on cell biology in automated microscopy images
  • SolarScan™, an automated melanoma diagnosis system, for Polartechnics Limited (a Sydney-based medical instrument manufacturer) - as the project leader, Ms Bischof was also the principal technical contributor to the related Boundary Finding in Dermatological Examination patent - the impact of this instrument, in lives saved and unnecessary excisions avoided, has been recognised both in sales and in awards
  • SilviScan™,  a world-first instrument for the rapid and non-destructive assessment of wood quality in trees.

Academic qualifications

Ms Bischof has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, with Distinction, from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, in 1976
  • Master of Biomedical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia, in 1989.

Achievements

As a member of the development team for SolarScan™, Ms Bischof was awarded:

  • a National Engineering Excellence award by the Institution of Engineers Australia, in 2005
  • the DuPont Innovation Award, Open Category, in 2005–06.

As a member of the SilviScan™ development team, Ms Bischof was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Gold Medal.
