The Australian Government has asked CSIRO to investigate current and future water availability in the Murray-Darling Basin region.

The year-long, A$12 million research project is the first attempt worldwide to estimate at a basin-scale the impacts on water resources of:

  • catchment development
  • changing groundwater extraction
  • climate variability
  • anticipated climate change.

Led by CSIRO, the research is drawing on the expertise of national and State Government agencies as well as the Murray-Darling Basin Commission and Australia’s leading industry consultants.

The Director of the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship, Dr Tom Hatton, explains what is involved and discusses the findings of the first in a series of reports on the Basin’s 18 catchment areas.
