Dr Rene Weiskircher: helping to simulate distributed electricity generation

Dr Rene Weiskircher is a researcher with CSIRO's Intelligent grid: a vision for Australia's future energy network.

Renewable energy

Renewable sources are set to play an integral part in energy delivery. CSIRO research in renewable energy aims to develop the underlying science and next generation technologies for energy production.

Reducing Australia's greenhouse emissions

To avoid dangerous climate change, the world needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This calls for broad-based action, and in Australia CSIRO is developing practical technologies to reduce emissions in the industry, agriculture, transport and energy sectors.

Real options analysis

CSIRO researchers are providing a glimpse into the future of Australia’s energy industry through our work in modelling and scenario analysis. CSIRO’s energy scenario modelling looks at where Australia’s energy sector was, is now and where it’s heading.

QGF and QGF-E

These techniques allow us to understand hydrocarbon migration and accumulation. They detect current and palaeo-oil zones by measuring the fluorescence from hydrocarbons sealed in fluid inclusions and at the surface of siliciclastic rocks.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle

CSIRO is researching the impact and benefits of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the electricity network, and how this low emission transport option could be integrated into our homes and cities in the future. (2 pages)

Ms Peta Ashworth: understanding public perceptions to complex issues

Ms Peta Ashworth's work coordinates a range of social research projects for a number of CSIRO flagships as she and her team continually trial new and old ways to integrate social sciences into the scientific research programs of CSIRO.

Our changing atmosphere

CSIRO’s changing atmosphere research measures and models levels of greenhouse and ozone-depleting gases in the atmosphere. The information underpins integrated solutions and sound management strategies for climate change and ozone depletion issues.

Oil migration intervals (OMI™)

The OMI™ technique is used to determine buoyancy and capillary controls in reservoirs in order to assess the location of oil accumulation.

Simulator solution for national energy market

Six years of national energy market data covering demand, pricing and power dispatch leads to unique simulation tool. Using the NEMsim simulation tool, it is now possible to represent Australia’s national energy market as a co-evolving system made up of complex interactions between participants and their associated markets.

National Solar Energy Centre

The National Solar Energy Centre (NSEC) comprises a high concentration tower solar array that can generate 500 kW of energy, and a low concentration linear array for solar thermal energy as shown in this video. (5:00)

Research cluster aims for breakthroughs in hydrogen materials science

The National Hydrogen Materials Alliance aims to develop new materials that improve the efficiency and economics of hydrogen generation, storage and end use.

Pulling together for a national fuel strategy

Mr David Lamb, Low Emissions Transport Leader in the Energy Transformed Flagship, believes it is time we pulled together for a national fuels strategy for Australia. He outlines his views in ON LINE Opinion,  an Australian e-journal of social and political debate.

Ms Naomi Boughen: exploring social dimensions

Ms Naomi Boughen is part of a team of social scientists exploring stakeholder perceptions to a range of complex issues that are strategically important to Australia.

Modelling for the electricity market

This video shows how a new computer modelling system, NEMsim, developed by CSIRO is helping bidders, investors and market regulators in the electricity market to make the right decisions. (1:00)

Dr Mick Wilson: improving oil and gas discovery and utilisation

Dr Mick Wilson has returned to CSIRO as Theme Leader, Low Emission Transport Fuels, after more than a decade in academia and industry. His current research includes nanotechnology, microbiologically enhancing oil recovery and deriving synfuels from gas.

Mr Michael Ambrose: developing a zero emission home for the mass housing market

Mr Ambrose is part of a team developing Australia’s first zero emission home designed specifically for the mass housing market.

Maine’s Power: local partnerships for better energy solutions

Castlemaine community and industry groups are tackling greenhouse emissions and an emerging energy crisis with support from the Sustainable Communities Initiative and its partners.

Dr Luke Connell: working on coal seam reservoirs and CO2 geosequestration

Dr Luke Connell is the stream leader for field development and processing and the team leader for coal seam reservoirs. His research includes reservoir simulation and characterisation of coal seam gas reservoirs.

Flagship research into low emissions transport

Energy Transformed Flagship research into low emission transport addresses the complex issues of vehicle fuels, reducing emissions and building and managing more efficient transport networks.

Developing solutions for low emission fuels

CSIRO’s alternative transport fuels research explores the feasibility of alternatives to traditional fuel types, such as petrol or diesel, and looks at the possible biophysical, social and economic impacts of their production and adoption.

Low emission electricity

The Flagship’s work in the area of low emission electricity centres upon the generation of ‘near-zero greenhouse gas’ electricity. (0:38)

Flagship research into low emission electricity

Our reliance on coal for power generation results in high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Working with the power generation industry, the Energy Transformed Flagship is researching ways to reduce these emissions while still meeting demand.

Low emission distributed energy

This video raises issues surrounding low emission distributed generation systems and how they will challenge our ideas about energy supply and where we generate power. (0:30)

Dr Liz Hobman: understanding individual, group and organisational behaviour

Dr Liz Hobman is an Organisational Psychologist working with the Energy Transformed Flagship and the Human Services Delivery Research Alliance between CSIRO and Centrelink/DHS.
