We're committed to the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers. Our postdoctoral fellowships provide PhD graduates with experience working alongside leaders in science and engineering, as well as generous personal development and learning opportunities.
Postdoctoral fellowships enable PhD graduates in many science and engineering disciplines to have their first career experience in one of our world class laboratories, under the supervision of leading researchers working on projects of national or global significance.
Postdoctoral fellows can undertake research in any of our business units, or in the National Facilities and Collections we manage.
Opportunities are advertised throughout the year, with up to 20 additional fellowships advertised twice a year, usually in May and October.
In 2016 we launched six new Future Science Platforms to focus on science that underpins innovation and has the potential to help reinvent and create new industries for Australia. These platforms will be offering significant opportunities for postdoctoral fellows to contribute to research that will underpin CSIRO's future innovation.
Fellowships are available to PhD graduates who have attained a PhD degree or who have submitted a doctoral thesis and are awaiting results. The study discipline must be related to our research. Applicants must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment.
We will sponsor overseas applicants who are eligible for appointment to obtain an Australian work visa. Appointment is subject to immigration requirements and security assessments being met.
Postdoctoral fellowships are designed to equip new graduates to embark on careers as independent researchers:
- A single term appointment as a postdoctoral fellow is for up to three years full-time or equivalent. Consecutive appointments as a postdoctoral fellow may be offered, provided that on completion of the second fellowship, the total relevant work experience since confirmation of the doctorate does not exceed six years.
- A training and development plan is developed in consultation with the postdoctoral fellow around the time of commencement. Plans generally encompass both on and off job training components and are designed to facilitate the development of the fellow's capabilities to those of expected of an independent researcher. Opportunities will be provided for the fellow to apply those capabilities in their work, as they develop.
- The training and development plan will include defined opportunities for formal involvement in research planning, conference attendance, publication and review of scientific papers and fully funded training courses for skills development.
When to apply
Most of our postdoctoral fellowships are advertised on an individual basis as opportunities arise throughout the year, so remember to check the current opportunities page regularly.
