Overview

Our Flagships deliver solutions for the benefit of Australia.

The National Research Flagships program is one of the largest scientific research programs ever undertaken in Australia, and has successfully transformed CSIRO’s capacity to deliver multi-disciplinary, large scale and mission directed science against a broad range of national challenges and priorities.

Since the launch of the first three Flagships in 2003, CSIRO has committed an increasing proportion of its resources to addressing major national challenges and opportunities through the broader Program.

As of July 2014, CSIRO brought Divisions and Flagships together to integrate all activities from capability development through to science delivery. Our Flagship program is one of our three lines of business:

  1. National facilities and collections
  2. Impact science - including a new Flagship portfolio, and
  3. Services - including education, publishing, infrastructure technologies, SME engagement and CSIRO Futures.

The Flagships deliver benefits to Australia by forming large-scale multidisciplinary research partnerships with Australian Universities and publicly funded research institutions, the private sector and international organisations.

The Flagships deliver benefits to Australia by forming large-scale multidisciplinary research partnerships with Australian Universities and publicly funded research institutions, the private sector and international organisations.

Each Flagship has clearly defined goals, framed from a careful analysis of the needs of people and enterprises, and with a strong focus on adoption and impact.

The Flagships

From July 2014 our Flagship portfolio consists of:

  • Agriculture
  • Biosecurity
  • Digital Productivity and Services
  • Energy
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Manufacturing
  • Land and Water
  • Mineral Resources
  • Oceans and Atmosphere

To ensure we reach Flagship goals, CSIRO conducts a three-to-four year cycle of independent reviews for each Flagship. Each review is conducted by a panel of experts from Australia and overseas.
