Property-scale solution for environmental monitoring and land management

Land and vegetation monitoring is now available to land managers on their own properties, based on more than a decade of research and experience in analysing remotely-sensed (satellite) data for monitoring land condition.

Meeting the need

CSIRO technology is helping individual land managers to see and quantify historical changes on their properties.

Satellite imagery, carefully processed, provides unique information on where and when the country has changed, at a scale and detail relevant to individual properties and remnants.

In combination with local expert knowledge of land and management history, this information provides a powerful tool to assist with understanding, decision-making and communication of land management issues.

The key is delivery of the image and monitoring data to land managers in their own operating environments.

Vegmachine™ is a software tool that delivers this data in an easy-to-use form.

With data prepared for their properties and minimal training, land managers can use Vegmachine™ to track changes over time and relate these to management and climate history.

The technology is applicable to grazed rangelands and to native vegetation management.

Land managers can use Vegmachine™ to track changes over time and relate these to management and climate history.

The technology behind the solution

The Vegmachine™ software utilises the expertise of CSIRO in analysis of remote sensing (satellite) data, and builds on the experience of:

  • the Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure
  • Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries.

Underlying the system is a database of consistently-processed time series imagery and summary products.

Core functions of the software are the display of:

  • images with the capacity to zoom, roam and to overlay vector files
  • ‘trend summary’ images which highlight areas of different temporal changes over a selected period.

The user can query the image time series to produce and compare graphical plots of time trends for selected points or areas.

Areas of positive and negative changes are readily indentified.

Outcomes

In combination with their own expert knowledge, this data allows land managers to use historic cover change information to assist with understanding, management and communication of land management issues.

Vegmachine™ uptake has exceeded expectations, with the software and products now in use on commercial grazing properties in:

  • the Northern Territory
  • Queensland
  • Western Australia.

Vegmachine is also being used by conservation agencies in southern Australia and in overseas projects.
